PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - A senior U.S. official has made a rare trip to impoverished Haiti to see how he can help improve its schools.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan is visiting classrooms where the students face obstacles to getting an education. He saw a seventh-grade class with more than a hundred students. He visited a school where the children sleep on the streets at night.
Duncan said Tuesday that he believes greater transparency can help improve education standards by letting people know more about student and teacher enrollment.
His two-day visit came as the U.S. Agency for International Development announced a $15 million grant to improve literacy rates in Haiti. The U.N. children agency UNICEF says the country's literacy rate is around 50 per cent.
Duncan leaves Haiti on Wednesday.
