Haiti twinning builds on past success

This year the Diocese of Richmond and the Diocese of Hinche celebrate their 25th year in twinning.

Sue Bucher, Patricia Colthurst, co-chairs of St. Gregory’s, Virginia Beach, Haiti Ministry and a group of volunteers extended hospitality to guests from the Tidewater area.

The theme of the 2013 gathering encompassed the idea that we have done an excellent job of generously donating aid in the form of direct funds to our twins. However, we know that self-sufficiency, leadership development, and sustainable projects are the keys to Haiti’s long-term success.

Justin Myers, from the diocesan Office of Social Ministry who is the Regional Coordinator for the Central Vicariate, spoke about his desire to build on the many successes the Haiti ministry has had. He urged diocesan committees and twin parishes to continue to follow clear fiscal policies and document their projects.

Father Bernard Desras, a member of the Bishops’ Council in Hinche, Haiti and pastor at St. Gabriel Parish, in Lascahobas, said twinning is based on solidarity, mutual prayers, relationships and trust.

“We need to keep humble and listen to our partners in Haiti, the priest and his parish council,” Father Bernard said, adding that they must make their own plans even if projects are partly funded in the U.S. He added that only the twin parish in Haiti can determine when and how to reduce dependency on aid from the twin parish in Virginia.

Following the speakers, various members of the Haiti Commission shared the latest news from their respective committees. Frank McKinney of Holy Spirit, Virginia Beach, introduced a Q&A session which allowed the audience to ask questions of the committee representatives.

The final hour of the gathering allowed parishes to share successes they have had in their twinned ministries, making this the foundation for future fellowship and networking.
